What to See in Scopello and Surroundings: Complete Guide + Local Tips
Scopello is one of the most charming corners of western Sicily: a small seaside village surrounded by unspoiled nature. What is there to see in Scopello? The village itself, watchtowers, hidden coves, sea stacks, and unique sunsets. Tenute Plaia is the perfect base from which to discover all of this. We live in this area every day and accompany our guests in exploring its wonders. Here are the must-see places to visit in Scopello and the surrounding area, with authentic and practical tips.
Scopello: What to See in the Village
Scopello is a small village in the municipality of Castellammare del Golfo, in the province of Trapani. A handful of houses, a square, a fountain — and yet, once you visit, you never forget it.
Its historic center — the characteristic baglio — is one of the most fascinating villages in western Sicily: an 18th-century noble courtyard surrounded by historic buildings, with the towers, the ancient tuna fishery, and the sea just steps away in the background.
And this is where Tenute Plaia's Dependance (tag) is located, with its apartments in a historic building that has belonged to the Plaia family for generations. You can see the studio apartments here . . .
Zingaro Nature Reserve: What to See and the Most Beautiful Coves
The Zingaro Nature Reserve is a must. Seven kilometers of wild coastline accessible only on foot — no cars, no noise, just nature in its purest form. A place that seems frozen in time, where the sea changes color with every bend in the path.
Along the route you'll come across some of the most beautiful coves in all of Sicily. Cala dell'Uzzo is the most popular: wide, easily accessible, ideal for a first stop. Cala Marinella, on the other hand, invites you to slow down — perfect for those seeking relaxation and tranquility away from the crowds. Those willing to venture a little further will find Cala Berretta, wilder and more secluded — one of those small rewards for walkers with a sense of curiosity.
A couple of practical tips: it's best to go early in the morning, bring water and something to eat, and wear closed, comfortable shoes — the trail is beautiful but it's no stroll along a promenade.
For guests of Tenute Plaia, there's an added bonus: the SOUTH entrance to the Reserve is just a few minutes from us. You can leave your car at the Reserve's car park and immediately immerse yourself in the greenery.
The Tonnara di Scopello and the Sea Stacks
The Tonnara di Scopello is one of those places that's hard to forget. An ancient tuna fishing facility, it has become a symbol of the most authentic Sicily — where history intertwines with a landscape of rare beauty. The sea stacks rising from the crystal-clear water, the nets resting against stone walls, the silence broken only by the waves: every corner tells centuries of life and labor at sea.
The tonnara can be visited during certain hours by reservation, and it is absolutely worth going inside. But even admiring it from above, looking down from the surrounding paths, offers an unforgettable perspective — one of those views that goes straight into the most beautiful photos of your trip.
Castellammare del Golfo: What to See
Just a few minutes from Scopello, the historic center of Castellammare del Golfo is well worth a stroll. The Aragonese castle overlooking the sea makes an immediate impression, but the old town has much more to offer: the Mother Church, the fishing harbor with its colorful boats, and the town-center streets alive with artisan shops and waterfront restaurants.
Nearby Excursions: Segesta and Erice
From Tenute Plaia's location, the history of ancient Sicily is literally within reach.
In just 20 minutes you can reach the Temple of Segesta, one of the most evocative monuments on the entire island. The majestic 5th-century BC Doric temple stands alone on a hill, surrounded by wild and silent countryside that further amplifies its grandeur.
Segesta was one of the most powerful centers of the Elymian people and later of the Greek people.
Even today it tells its story through the temple, the Greek theatre — which hosts classical performances in summer — and the ancient thermal springs. One of those places where history isn't studied, it's breathed.
A few kilometers away lies Erice, the medieval village perched at 750 meters on Monte San Giuliano. Stone alleyways, ancient walls, and a view that on clear days stretches all the way to the Egadi Islands: climbing up to Erice is like stepping outside of time.
And before heading back, one stop is a must: Maria Grammatico's pastry shop, where almond sweets and genovesi made according to ancient convent tradition are yet another reason to make the journey up.
Two spectacular destinations for lovers of history, culture, and unique scenery — and from Tenute Plaia, both are just around the corner.
